Bill Muckalt grew up in various cities on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada, including Kelowna, Merritt and Williams Lake. From an early age his first passion was hockey. After progressing through minor hockey levels, he played three seasons in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League for the Merrittt Centenials and the Kelowna Spartans. During the 1993-94 BCJHL season, Bill helped Kelowna advance to the finals of the Canadian Championships. With doing so he accepted a scholarship to The University of Michigan and was also drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. While at The University of Michigan he received a degree in Sports Management and Communication, was a part of two NCAA Championship teams in 1996 and 1998, earned all-american honors, and was nominated as a finalist for the Hobey Baker (an award given to the top collegiate hockey player). Bill amassed 226 points over four seasons which led all NCAA players for that time period. After college, Bill spent six seasons in the NHL playing for the Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators and Minnesota Wild. While playing in the NHL he owned homes in each city. He began investing in real estate opportunities across North America and developed a significant interest in the home renovating and construction process. After thirteen surgeries, he retired from professional hockey and decided to pursue another passion, namely, construction.
Bill’s first experience with construction came at the age 12 working as a laborer. He continued to build his construction resume while working for Westower (a communication tower company) owned by Calvin Payne (Bill’s uncle), gaining more experience and responsibility with each passing spring and summer. The job description included all areas of site construction from foundation work through to tower assembly. While recovering from surgery he decided that the time had come to validate his passion for home construction and soon thereafter garnered his Michigan Builders License. In 2004, Bill started Vintage Construction and started doing a wide range of residential construction projects, ranging from home additions to building 5000 square foot homes in and around the Ann Arbor area.
With his spare time Bill is an active member of the community, being involved with various charities and organizations. He is currently coaching with ex- NHLer Lee Norwood for the Eastern Michigan University Club Hockey team. He is a member of the Detroit Red wings Alumni Association, participating in various games and events for charity throughout Michigan. Bill also enjoys spending what little time leftover being an avid outdoorsman.
